Paimaish - Land Unit Converter

Paimaish - Land Unit Converter

Local land records. The right local math.

Gallery

About the Project

> Paimaish turns the language of regional land records into clear, explainable figures.

#### The problem

Lawyers, landowners and citizens regularly encounter sale deeds, jamabandis, mutation records, partition documents and compensation files expressed in units such as Kanal–Marla, Bigha–Biswa–Biswansi, Killa and Ghumaon.

These are not uniform measures. Their value can change according to the local Karam length, tract, settlement system and State. A generic conversion table can therefore produce a figure that looks precise but is materially wrong for the record being examined.

#### How Paimaish helps

Paimaish first asks users to identify the relevant Punjab tract, Haryana settlement system or Himachal Pradesh district group. It then applies the appropriate local conversion ladder.

Users can:

  • convert a single land unit;
  • enter a mixed Kanal–Marla record;
  • work directly with Bigha–Biswa–Biswansi entries;
  • translate a rate per unit across equivalent measures; and
  • add or subtract two land records without manually normalising them first.

Every result is presented across relevant local and standard units. A user can open any result to inspect the step-by-step arithmetic behind it. Where the selected record system does not define a unit, Paimaish displays `***` instead of manufacturing a plausible-looking conversion.

#### Designed for practical legal work

Paimaish can assist with calculations and explanations in:

  • conveyancing and title review;
  • partition and inheritance matters;
  • land acquisition and compensation;
  • valuation and rate comparison;
  • property disputes; and
  • clear communication of land measurements to clients.

The submitted web converter is free, requires no account and can work offline as an installable progressive web app.

#### A continuing product, not a one-off prototype

The website extends the same regional conversion model used by the published Paimaish app for iPhone and iPad.

The iOS product demonstrates the broader vision through:

  • interfaces in English, Hindi and Punjabi;
  • pinned units and conversion history;
  • calculation sharing and export; and
  • a privacy-first design, with Apple's listing stating that app data is not collected.

The website was built and refined through AI-assisted coding, using the shipped iOS product and regional land-measurement tables as its domain reference.

> Responsible-use note: Paimaish is a calculation and comprehension aid. It does not provide legal advice and is not a substitute for the governing revenue record, official measurement or professional verification.

Practice Areas

Key Features

> Regional intelligence, transparent arithmetic and practical workflows for real land records.

#### Region-aware conversion

  • Local rules, not generic assumptions: Paimaish applies the relevant conversion model for Punjab tracts, Haryana settlement systems and Himachal Pradesh district groups.
  • Nineteen local and standard units: Convert between familiar revenue units and measures such as square feet, square yards, square metres, acres and hectares.
  • Record-system applicability: Available units and conversion ladders change responsibly according to the selected region and historical system.

#### Five practical workflows

  1. Single Unit — enter one value and see every relevant equivalent.
  2. Kanal / Marla — enter mixed records exactly as they are written.
  3. Legacy Units — work directly with Bigha, Biswa and Biswansi.
  4. Rate per Unit — translate a land price across equivalent units.
  5. Record Calculator — add or subtract two Kanal–Marla or Bigha–Biswa–Biswansi entries.

#### Explainable and responsible results

  • Step-by-step calculations: Open any result to inspect the arithmetic behind the final figure.
  • No fabricated conversions: Unsupported units display `***` instead of a misleading number.
  • Context beside the calculation: Reference tables, regional notes and cautions explain why the same unit may vary by place or settlement system.

#### Accessible on the web

  • Free and immediate: The web converter requires no account or registration.
  • Offline-capable: Progressive web app support allows calculations to continue after the working shell has been cached.
  • Browser-based access: Users can open the tool without installing a native application.

#### Backed by a shipped iOS product

  • Shared conversion foundation: The website uses the same core regional domain model as the published Paimaish app for iPhone and iPad.
  • Multilingual iOS experience: English, Hindi and Punjabi interfaces make the product accessible to more users working with local records.
  • Built for continued use: The app includes pinned units, conversion history, calculation sharing and export.
  • Privacy-first: Apple's public App Store listing states that the iOS app collects no app data.

Help Needed

> We are looking for domain experts and collaborators who can help Paimaish expand without compromising regional accuracy.

#### Legal and practitioner validation

We would value feedback from property lawyers, conveyancing teams, revenue officials, land-record practitioners and law students who can:

  • test Paimaish against anonymised sale deeds, jamabandis, mutation records and partition calculations;
  • verify whether the selected terminology and workflows match real legal practice;
  • identify ambiguous record formats, unusual calculations and other practical edge cases; and
  • review how results, cautions and limitations are communicated to users.

#### Regional data and source verification

We welcome assistance with:

  • validating additional district-, tract- and era-specific conversion tables;
  • locating authoritative government notifications, manuals and revenue-record references;
  • documenting the provenance and assumptions behind each conversion rule; and
  • developing a more auditable library of official sources and legal disclaimers.

#### Expansion to other Indian States

Paimaish currently focuses on Punjab, Haryana and selected Himachal Pradesh record systems. We are seeking collaborators who can help identify:

  • local land-measurement terminology used in other States;
  • regional variations in unit values and conversion ladders;
  • historical systems that remain relevant in present-day records; and
  • the legal and administrative context needed before adding a new region.

#### Product testing and collaboration

We also welcome:

  • participants for the Android closed test;
  • usability feedback on the web and iOS experiences;
  • accessibility and language-review support; and
  • long-term collaborators interested in legal technology, land records and access to justice.

> Our priority is careful, source-backed expansion—not maximum coverage at the cost of accuracy.
