What does Legal Aid Connect do? Every law university in India is required under the Bar Council of India's mandate to run a functioning legal aid clinic. Legal Aid Connect is the missing link between that clinic and the person who actually needs it. A user can submit their legal problem by voice or text, in English or their own regional language. The case is then classified by jurisdiction, type of legal assistance required, and area of law, and either allocated directly to a clinic or opened to a pool where eligible clinics can pick it up based on their registered expertise. Clinics operate on a separate provider dashboard built to show them only the cases relevant to their capacity and specialization, and can also register a case on behalf of someone who visits the clinic in person rather than using the platform. The platform also maintains a directory of every registered university legal aid clinic, listing its contact details, resources, and areas of expertise.
What problem does it solve? Legal aid infrastructure in India already exists at scale through university clinics, but it remains largely invisible to the people it is meant to serve. Someone with a legal problem has no reliable way of finding out which clinic can help, what it specializes in, or how to contact it. On the provider side, clinics also tend to operate in isolation from each other. Even when one clinic lacks the expertise or resources to handle a complex case, there is no structured way for it to identify and coordinate with another clinic that does, and cases that need this kind of joint handling often just don't get taken up. Legal Aid Connect addresses the user-facing problem through visibility and routing, and addresses the provider-side problem by giving clinics a shared directory and a way to communicate and coordinate with each other on cases that need more than one clinic's resources to solve. Language is a secondary matching factor in this process, prioritizing clinics that already operate in the user's language wherever possible.
