About the Project

The Problem?

Law students spend countless hours parsing dense casebooks to extract key facts and understand complex doctrines. Generic AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude help, but they lack course-specific context and require constant prompt engineering to get useful answers.

What is ProperTA?

ProperTA is an AI teaching assistant purpose-built for law school courses. Professors upload course materials (casebooks, supplements, lecture notes) and students get instant access to an AI trained on their specific syllabus. Students can ask natural language questions and get answers grounded in their course readings—no prompt engineering required.

Professors gain visibility into student engagement through analytics showing which topics students struggle with most, enabling more targeted teaching.

Practice Areas

Key Features

  1. Professor Control Panel
  • Upload all course PDFs in one place
  • Test AI responses in a sandbox before releasing to students
  • Enable/disable interaction modes based on pedagogical goals
  1. Specialized Interaction Modes: ProperTA offers five purpose-built modes that understand law school learning:
  • Short Answer Mode - Quick clarifications on doctrine and holdings
  • Deep Explanation Mode - Thorough analysis of complex legal concepts
  • Cold Call Mode - Socratic-style Q&A to prepare for class discussion
  • Briefcase Mode - Case briefing assistance (facts, issue, holding, reasoning)
  • Exam Prep Mode - Practice applying rules to hypotheticals
  1. Law School-Optimized Retrieval
  • Unlike generic AI, ProperTA's retrieval system is designed to surface nuanced legal arguments and fact patterns buried deep in casebooks that standard AI models miss or hallucinate about. It maintains course-specific context across all materials, so students get answers grounded in what the professor actually assigned—not generic legal principles.4. All-in-One Course Materials Hub
  • Students access every reading, supplement, and lecture note through a single interface without juggling multiple PDFs or building custom prompts.
